Melanotan 2 (also referred to as Melanotan II) is a synthetically produced variant of a peptide hormone naturally produced in the body that stimulates melanogenesis, a process responsible for pigmentation of the skin. This peptide hormone, called alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone or MSH, activates certain melanocortin receptors in the process of exerting its effects.

Indeed, Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (MSH) exerts a powerful influence on various aspects of the body, including lipid metabolism, appetite regulation, and sexual libido, by activating melanocortin receptors. As a result, Melanotan II, a synthetic MSH analog, has demonstrated in research studies its potential to suppress appetite, facilitate fat breakdown, enhance libido, and induce skin tanning.

Melanotan 2 has been researched extensively for use in protecting against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation from sunlight due to its melanogenesis-stimulating properties.

Additionally, Melanotan 2 and a similar synthetically produced variant, known as PT-141, have been studied at length as a potential remedy for the treatment of sexual dysfunction; specifically, male erectile dysfunction.

Melanotan II and PT-141 are both synthetic peptides that activate melanocortin receptors in the body, but they have different mechanisms of action and intended uses. Melanotan II primarily stimulates skin tanning and has additional effects on appetite suppression and libido enhancement. On the other hand, PT-141, also known as Bremelanotide, specifically targets the melanocortin receptors involved in sexual function and has been studied for the treatment of sexual dysfunction, particularly in men with erectile dysfunction. While both peptides have overlapping effects on libido, PT-141 is more focused on addressing sexual dysfunction, while Melanotan II has broader effects on tanning and appetite regulation.
